Why Are My Pothos Leaves Turning Yellow? 7 Causes and Fixes
Start with the pattern
Where the yellow appears tells you a lot. One or two old leaves near the base yellowing slowly is often normal aging. Many leaves yellowing at once, especially with soft stems, points to water. Pale, washed-out yellow across the whole plant suggests light or nutrients. Before changing anything, check the soil 2 inches down.
1. Overwatering (the most common cause)
Pothos prefer the top third of the soil to dry out between waterings. Constantly wet soil starves roots of oxygen. Leaves turn soft yellow, sometimes with brown patches, and may drop. Fix: stop watering until the top 1–2 inches are dry, empty saucers, and make sure the pot drains. If stems are black and mushy at the soil line or the soil smells sour, unpot it, trim rotten roots, and repot in fresh, well-draining mix.
2. Underwatering
Severely dry pothos yellow too, usually with crispy brown edges, curling and limp vines. The soil will be bone-dry and may pull away from the pot. Fix: soak thoroughly, letting water drain through. If the soil repels water, bottom-water for 20–30 minutes. Then check more regularly instead of waiting for drooping.
3. Watering swings
Alternating bone-dry and soggy stresses roots and yellows leaves even if the "average" is right. A steady rhythm of checking every few days and watering when dry fixes this.
4. Too little (or too much) light
Pothos tolerate low light but get pale, leggy and drop leaves in dim corners. Low light also means slower drying, which compounds overwatering. Harsh direct sun can bleach leaves yellow-white with scorched patches. Fix: bright, indirect light, such as near an east window or a few feet from a south or west one.
5. Natural aging
Each vine sheds its oldest leaves over time. If it's one leaf at a time near the base and new growth looks healthy, just snip it off.
6. Nutrient deficiency
A pothos in the same soil for years with no feeding can yellow overall, especially older leaves (often nitrogen). Fix: feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer at half strength monthly in spring and summer. Don't fertilize a plant that's struggling with root rot.
7. Temperature stress and pests
Cold drafts below about 50°F (10°C) or blasts from heaters can yellow leaves. Check the undersides for spider mites (fine webbing), mealybugs (white fluff) or scale. Wipe leaves, and treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
Should I cut off yellow leaves?
Yes. Yellow leaves won't turn green again. Remove them with clean scissors to keep the plant tidy and redirect energy, but fix the cause first or new leaves will follow.
Prevent it next time
Most yellow pothos come down to watering by calendar instead of by soil.
FAQ
What is the most common cause of yellow pothos leaves?
Overwatering. Let the top 1–2 inches of soil dry before watering, and make sure the pot drains.
Should I cut yellow leaves off my pothos?
Yes. Yellow leaves won't turn green again. Snip them with clean scissors, but fix the cause first.
Can low light make pothos leaves yellow?
Yes. Dim corners make pothos pale and leggy, and slower drying adds to overwatering. Move it to bright, indirect light.
